Types of Silly Tavern character card editors: built-in, web, standalone, extensions

Series: Silly Tavern character card editors (5 parts). When people search silly tavern cards editor, they’re really choosing where to edit text, where files save, and whether fields get stripped. Not official Silly Tavern documentation.

A useful split is four categories—you often mix them in one project.

1) Built-in Silly Tavern editor

What it solves: create / edit / import characters inside ST with form fields—good for “ship today.”

Best for: tweaking a few lines, swapping greetings, quick chat tests.

Next post covers the Characters panel conceptually; official docs: docs.sillytavern.app (labels depend on your build).

2) Web editors

What it solves: edit in a browser; some accept PNG upload and export again.

Best for: quick edits without launching ST.

Privacy: uploading a card uploads its contents to someone else’s server unless the tool clearly states it’s local-only (see part 3).

3) Standalone / open-source editors

What it solves: edit without ST’s UI; some focus on V2/V3 compatibility, batching, offline workflows.

Best for: many cards, diffs, git-friendly file management.

4) Silly Tavern extensions

What it solves: buttons inside ST to LLM-generate or fill fields from existing data.

Best for: drafting-heavy workflows; names change—see part 5.

Pick fast

  1. Need speed: start built-in.
  2. Need to edit every JSON line in PNG with backups: standalone or file-first Mac tools (footer).
  3. Batch: avoid clicking 100 times in a web UI—use files + scripts/tools.
  4. Field meanings: Silly Tavern character card fields.
